The return of perfect skin

In its optimum state, our skin shields us from the elements in the form of a living, seamless robe. But trauma, such as rapid stretching of the epidermis during growth or weight-gain, or increased blood volume within the delicate blood vessels just beneath the dermis, may cause this exquisite, living fabric to seem less than flawless. Common conditions such as stretch marks and spider veins may become the focus of unwelcome attention.

Simon Ourian, M.D., a leader in non-invasive skin therapies, says, “It’s all about the integrity of the skin. Integrity literally means that all of the elements join together to form a cohesive whole. When there is trauma, we experience disintegration—some of the elements separate, and we lose the original unity. My practice is dedicated to restoring the integrity of the skin, by allowing it to heal and balance itself.”

Although stretch marks and spider veins are purely cosmetic complaints, causing no risk to the health of the individual, Dr. Ourian comments that modern technology now makes it possible for individuals to enjoy flawless skin with virtually painless, non-intrusive therapies. Inspired to correct these and other common conditions, Dr. Ourian developed the revolutionary Coolbeam laser technique, which addresses the superficial surface distress of stretch marks and the Bluelight laser to address thread-like, blue or red congestion of telangiectasias, or spider veins.

The Bluelight laser pulses light through the skin to the blood vessel, raising its internal temperature and safely coagulating it. Over time, the treated vessel fades and slowly disappears. This approach is especially well-suited for treating acne rosacea, a vascular-based disorder which currently is an increasing phenomenon among American adults.

Dr. Ourian’s Bluelight laser technique also may be the ideal treatment for the vascular distress which may develop in response to sun exposure, cold, or other environmental factors. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation may also result in persistent flushing of the face which may be safely addressed by laser therapy. For the treatment of larger varicose veins which may become visible as the result of pregnancy, obesity or years of a sedentary lifestyle, Dr. Ourian may recommend sclerotherapy or treatment by venous injection.

This technique utilizes a superfine needle to administer a compound which safely closes off the vessel, eventually making it invisible to the naked eye. Stretch marks may appear as the result of pregnancy or other sudden weight gain, as well as other growth factors, and affects men and teens as well as expectant moms. Initially, the stretch marks appear red, and are best treated as early in their appearance as possible for optimum results.

Later, stretch marks turn silvery or white, and become less responsive to treatment. However, laser treatment still may be successful for diminishing this condition commonly found on the soft tissue of the bust line, tummy, torso and upper arms. Once the damaged skin is removed, new skin quickly grows in its place. The Coolbeam laser, combined with a device that simultaneously cools the skin, makes the treatment far more comfortable than earlier laser procedures.

“Keeping the skin vital and refreshed is absolutely an option for everyone, at every age, ” says Dr. Ourian. “Our human skin truly is a wonder, and we are dedicated to preserving its health, its integrity, and its beauty through the most advanced technologies and treatments available in the world of medicine today.”

American Registry is partnered with a variety of groups and organizations acknowledged for their efforts to recognize excellence in professionals and business organizations. According to American Registry more than 400, 000 patient ratings and reviews were gathered. After all this data was sorted and analyzed a select few of the most beloved physicians in the nation are granted a Patients’ Choice Award.

Dr. Ourian was singled out for his bedside manner, the amount of time he spent with his patients and their overall perception of him as a physician. Additionally the staff at Epione was recognized for their courtesy and follow-up; certainly a reflection on Dr. Ourian’s decade-long effort to build the finest med-spa facility in the U.S.

When reached for comment Dr. Ourian said: “This award from my patients is especially gratifying. When I was a teenager I worked every day after school and saved my money to get a nose job. Friends and family thought I was crazy but I knew that if I took care of this one thing that bothered me it would make me feel better. Little did I know that operation would change my life; the results were so profound both physically and emotionally I decided then and there, before I went to college or medical school, that what I wanted to do with my life was help people feel better about themselves the way I did at that moment. I’ve put my heart and soul into building Epione into a practice dedicated to this goal and this Patients’ Choice Award is a wonderful validation of my efforts. Of course, I need to acknowledge, as our patients did, the hard work of my staff to provide the best experience possible for every client that walks through our doors.”

Dr. Simon Ourian Saves the Life of Beverly Hills Deputy Mayor

Dr. Simon Ourian was given the Heartsaver Award by the American Heart Association in recognition and acknowledgment for the heroic use of CPR in the saving of the life of the Assistant Mayor of Beverly Hills Mayor on the night of November 17, 2008.

March 22, 2009 — It seemed just like any other night out in Beverly Hills 90210, the enclave of Los Angeles, California known for its high-end Rodeo Drive shopping, restaurants and hotels. Dr. Simon Ourian was enjoying a quiet dinner out with his wife.

Like a scene from a movie there was a commotion and Dr. Ourian heard those famous words: “Is there a doctor in the house?” Rushing over to the gathering crowd Dr. Ourian quickly assessed the situation; an older gentleman was thrashing about on the floor clearly gasping for air. “I spent some time in the ER during medical school and all that experience came rushing back to me. Priority number one is getting a clear airway. The brain can only survive for so long if it’s deprived of oxygen”, explained Dr. Ourian. “It was apparent to me that something was lodged in this gentleman’s throat. I reached in my fingers and pulled out a piece of meat. Immediately the gentleman gasped for air.”

“I’d also like to credit the paramedics of the Beverly Hills Fire Department for their rapid response. It seemed like only a minute passed and they were by my side readying the gentleman for transport to Cedars Sinai Hospital.” It was only later that Dr. Ourian that the man whose life he’d saved was the Deputy Mayor of Beverly Hills Mayor.

“It’s nothing you ever expect outside a hospital emergency room but this is what my medical training has prepared me for”, says Dr. Ourian. “I’m not a hero”, he modestly adds.

Dr. Ourian continues: “I’m very grateful to the American Heart Association for this award and I’d like to use this opportunity to urge everyone to sign up for the CPR, AED and first aid training offered by the American Red Cross. Most Americans hear about Red Cross when it’s providing disaster relief at the scene of an earthquake or hurricane or most famously raising tsunami disaster relief fund. That’s wonderful, of course, but it’s this training that helps regular folks save lives every day.” More information about training available in your area can be found at http://www.redcross.org.
