Facelifts Via Stem Cell

Stem cells have created controversy since they were first discovered. Scientists are still on the lookout for ways to use them, and the cosmetic surgery industry is no exception. The company NeoStem has thrown its gauntlet into the ring by applying for a patent for stem cell face lifts. According to NeoStem these pluripotent (able to grow into any type of cell) cells are injected into the face. As they grow, they reduce signs of aging, like wrinkles and sagging, and encourage cell growth and regeneration. The skin becomes plumper and better toned over treatments.

The best part about the procedure is that stem cell facelifts are not major surgery. Healing time is only a fraction of what is needed for a traditional facelift. The patient is simply give a local anesthetic, and the injections are administered to the problem areas. Soon enough, the patient is on their way. The speed and efficiency of the process will be enough to make it very popular.

L’Oreal and its scientists are currently researching stem cells and their effects on the aging process. Their hope is to figure out how stem cells help regenerate the skin. If they reach their goal, they will have made huge strides in determining how that knowledge can be used for anti aging products. They are hoping to make their mark in the anti aging market soon.

Best Celebrity Acne Scar Treatment

What do Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears have in common with 85% of all teens? Acne! They bear the acne scars to prove it. Dr. Simon Ourian believes the Coolaser is the most effective available treatment to deal with this affliction.

May 04, 2009 — Doctor Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, located in the exclusive shopping, restaurant and hotel enclave in Los Angeles, California treats acne and acne scars every day. His patients, both men and women, tell him how they suffered as teens with active acne and continue to suffer with the resulting scars. Doctor Ourian empathizes more than they might imagine because he too was prone to acne in his younger days. “I had acne as a teen, ” says Doctor Ourian, “not as bad as some but enough to cause me great embarrassment. In fact, it’s one of the reasons I decided to practice as a cosmetic Dermatologist.”

“Flawless skin is a rather rare commodity, ” continues Doctor Ourian, “you’d be surprised what many top actors, actresses and models have to go through to cover up their flaws. Some employ literally teams of people to do their makeup and ensure that they’re shot at the best angle and in only the most flattering light.”

“For some, such as Edward James Olmos, their acne scars are quite apparent. Brad Pitt is one of the best actors in Hollywood and one of the most famous people on the planet but it appears obvious to me that he was an acne sufferer. Just imagine how difficult it is for women such as Cameron Diaz, Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears. Like it or not, female celebrities are held to an almost impossible standard of beauty.”

Doctor Ourian gives a brief description of acne and its causes: “People who’ve never had acne may not know that its one of the most common skin diseases. Generally it develops in the teens but can continue for some into their 20’s and beyond. Acne results from the overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands that then mix with dead skin cells to clog the pores of the skin. These clogs are a breeding ground for bacteria which in turn may leak to neighboring tissue causing redness, swelling and bumps or pimples.”

Patients that suffered from acne are likely to have acne scars; for some these scars can be almost disfiguring. These scars may vary widely in type, color and shape. Doctor Ourian utilizes the Coolaser as part of an individualized treatment protocol designed for each of his patients. “With the Coolaser, ” explains Doctor Ourian, “I can literally scan down the surface of the skin so that the acne scars are less deep. I’ve worked hard over the years to develop the technology and technique that allows me the control necessary to remove only as much as needed, maintaining as much of the healthy skin as possible. Depending on the severity and depth of the acne scars I may inject a dermal filler such as Juvéderm, Radiesse or Restylane.”
According to Doctor Ourian, “The Coolaser is a very safe procedure and the discomfort is usually temporary and we prepare the patient’s skin with a topical anesthetic first. Most patients report that it feels like the snapping of a rubber band.”

“I have been helping patients with acne scars for more than ten years, ” concludes Doctor Ourian, “and I believe the Coolaser achieves results superior to other laser or treatment modalities, especially when used in conjunction with a dermal filler.”

Dr. Simon Ourian Saves the Life of Beverly Hills Deputy Mayor

Dr. Simon Ourian was given the Heartsaver Award by the American Heart Association in recognition and acknowledgment for the heroic use of CPR in the saving of the life of the Assistant Mayor of Beverly Hills Mayor on the night of November 17, 2008.

March 22, 2009 — It seemed just like any other night out in Beverly Hills 90210, the enclave of Los Angeles, California known for its high-end Rodeo Drive shopping, restaurants and hotels. Dr. Simon Ourian was enjoying a quiet dinner out with his wife.

Like a scene from a movie there was a commotion and Dr. Ourian heard those famous words: “Is there a doctor in the house?” Rushing over to the gathering crowd Dr. Ourian quickly assessed the situation; an older gentleman was thrashing about on the floor clearly gasping for air. “I spent some time in the ER during medical school and all that experience came rushing back to me. Priority number one is getting a clear airway. The brain can only survive for so long if it’s deprived of oxygen”, explained Dr. Ourian. “It was apparent to me that something was lodged in this gentleman’s throat. I reached in my fingers and pulled out a piece of meat. Immediately the gentleman gasped for air.”

“I’d also like to credit the paramedics of the Beverly Hills Fire Department for their rapid response. It seemed like only a minute passed and they were by my side readying the gentleman for transport to Cedars Sinai Hospital.” It was only later that Dr. Ourian that the man whose life he’d saved was the Deputy Mayor of Beverly Hills Mayor.

“It’s nothing you ever expect outside a hospital emergency room but this is what my medical training has prepared me for”, says Dr. Ourian. “I’m not a hero”, he modestly adds.

Dr. Ourian continues: “I’m very grateful to the American Heart Association for this award and I’d like to use this opportunity to urge everyone to sign up for the CPR, AED and first aid training offered by the American Red Cross. Most Americans hear about Red Cross when it’s providing disaster relief at the scene of an earthquake or hurricane or most famously raising tsunami disaster relief fund. That’s wonderful, of course, but it’s this training that helps regular folks save lives every day.” More information about training available in your area can be found at http://www.redcross.org.

When he’s not saving lives, Dr. Ourian is a renowned cosmetic Dermatologist and the medical director of Epione Beverly Hills, the institute he built. Dr. Ourian’s Epione Medical Corporation, located in Beverly Hills Golden Triangle, is among the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art laser and aesthetic surgery centers. Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Surgeries Up in a Down Economy

Many plastic surgeons are suffering from the downturn in the economy as people postpone or cancel their costly cosmetic surgery procedures. But renowned cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Simon Ourian M.D. says that these very same people are turning to him, and his center Epione Beverly Hills, for the minimally invasive procedures in which he specializes.

March 22, 2009 — The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), just released a new survey showing there were more than 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. in 2008. That’s about 1 million fewer than in 2007, representing a 12% decrease in the total number of cosmetic procedures. The survey does seem to indicate though a clear shift toward noninvasive procedures The ASAPS has been conducting these surveys since 1997 and cosmetic procedures are up and average of 65% since 1997, minimally invasive procedures are up 239%.

“It is important to appreciate the distinction between invasive surgical procedures and minimally invasive procedures, ” states Dr. Ourian, “in order to understand the numbers. In the simplest sense invasive procedures typically involve the skin being cut. While some invasive procedures are now performed in-office most still require an operating room of some sort. To make these procedures more appealing to potential patients plastic surgeons are performing some under a local, rather than general, anesthesia.”

“Some examples of invasive procedures are: breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. The costs are high because patients typically have to pay for the time of their plastic surgeon as well as the time of an anesthesiologist and the use of an operating theater. A hidden cost, but one which I’m sure is on the minds of more consumers than ever, is the downtime. If you can’t work, you can’t earn a living. And even if you’re taking paid time off to recover, I think people aren’t sure leaving their job for a week or more is a good idea these days.”

“Minimally invasive procedures on the other hand”, continues Dr. Ourian, “offer long-lasting results and little to no downtime, typically at a fraction of the cost of invasive cosmetic surgery.”

According to Allergan Inc. the manufacturer of Botox, Dr. Ourian’s Epione Beverly Hills is the busiest Botox office in Southern California. “I certainly pride myself on this, ” notes Dr. Ourian, “but minimally invasive procedures means a lot more than Botox these days. I am a big proponent of dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Juvéderm, and Perlane. With a simple injection or series of injections I can eliminate wrinkles and facial folds.”

“I know that these are difficult times for some of my colleagues who are excellent plastic surgeons and Dermatologists, ” concludes Dr. Ourian, “but we still maintain a waiting list. Some procedures such as Botox and laser hair removal are as popular today as they’ve ever been. We also offer a line of skin care products.”

Dr. Ourian’s Epione Medical Corporation, located in Beverly Hills Golden Triangle, is among the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art laser and aesthetic surgery centers. Achieve those Summer Abs!

Summertime and Getting a Beautiful Body!Everyone knows the trick to getting the perfect summer body is great abs. Here are a few tips for getting and maintaining a great stomach.

Many people think all it takes to get flat abs is hundreds of sit-ups or crunches. While you may be building up your ab muscles by doing these exercises, they will not remove any fat that might be sitting on top of the muscles. To show off your abs, you have to burn fat. To burn fat, you have to stoke your metabolism by building muscle. Replacing just 1 pound of fat with muscle will force your body to fry up to an additional 50 calories a day.

To build up the muscles in your abs, be sure to eat enough. Muscles are only formed when the body has enough nutrients available.

Sometimes exercise isn’t enough to remove those last, stubborn pockets of fat. Give Epione a call at 888.931.3366 to discuss the body sculpting options we have available for you.

Travel Pitfall: Weight Gain

It’s summer vacation time and travelers face particularly daunting challenges in staying fit. Tropical drinks, tasty food and lots of lounging can wreak havoc on any diet. Vacation can be a great motivator for weight loss—there’s nothing quite like the prospect of spending a week in a swimsuit to get into the gym. But while traveling to and then reaching your destination, temptation can rear its ugly head in the form of fruity drinks, rich dinners and days of relaxing by the pool.

Getting There

If you’re flying, the average airline meal packs more than 1, 000 calories. If you call 24 hours ahead, you can request the low-fat or low-calorie option. Or better yet, bring fresh food with you.

If you’re driving, bring a cooler and load it with low-calorie snacks of your choice—fruit, carrots, cheese sticks, yogurt. A small meal every few hours will keep you from overeating down the road, and you’ll steer clear of those dangerous fast-food chains.

Once There

Mini-bars: If your hotel has a mini-bar stocked with candy, chips, and liquor you always have the option of refusing the key.

Avoid bad breakfasts: If you’re accustomed to starting your day with a light meal, breakfast on the road could be your dietary downfall. Perhaps the best choice of all: a little box of cereal from the buffet, skim milk, and a piece of fruit.

Pick and choose: This is your vacation. If you want wine with dinner, order it. But then pass on the bread. Get dessert—but split it with a companion. Make every meal an occasion. Seek out foods you really love and skip those you don’t. Eat only what tastes great. Don’t waste calories on foods you can live without.
