What is Blue Light Therapy?

Blue Light Therapy is a skin treatment that was developed by Dr. Simon Ourian, M.D. and Dr. Bob Ourian, M.D. in response to wanting to treat a variety of skin conditions such as melsama, freckles, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, spider veins and dark spots on the face. Patients at Epione enjoy the benefits of blue light therapy as they can achieve their aesthetic goals without having to go under the knife.

How does Blue Light Therapy Work?

During the Blue Light Therapy procedure, a photosensitive gel is first applied to the face, or area of skin that is to be treated. After the gel has set for a few minutes, a series of intense light will be emitted over the affected area. As the light is targeted over the affected areas, tiny capillaries and any pigmented surfaces on the skin will be absorbed or evaporated as they are heated. This treatment can help get rid of unwanted freckles, age spots and hyperpigmentation.

The energy that is emitted from the light is able to create micro pores within the capillaries which causes them to shrink. In 3 to 4 week intervals, the procedure is repeated until the desired results are achieved. The special type of light that is used for Blue Light Therapy is different from other laser treatments as it emits light over many wavelengths. This allows for the light to penetrate to all the levels of the skin and reach the abnormal dilated vessels.

How to Prepare and What to Expect with Blue Light Therapy:

Before undergoing blue light therapy for any skin irregularity, your doctor will advise you about a pre-treatment plan. This plan may vary depending on a variety of factors and each procedure is individualized to the patients needs. Your doctor will also provide you with a plan for aftercare immediately after the treatment.

After the procedure it is typical for patients to have mild swelling and some skin redness. These small side effects can easily be treated with ice and soothing cremes. They will also help in speeding up the healing process. Before you know it you will have healthy and beautiful skin with the help of blue light therapy.
