Say “Adios” to Acne Scars

acne-free faceThe Coolaser shows remarkable success in diminishing acne scars & pitting. A 2-step process including dermal fillers may all but eliminate even severe scarring.

Acne is bad enough when it first occurs, whether during the teen years or later in adulthood. Severe cases can leave unsightly and embarrassing scars, pitting and skin unevenness that can remain for a lifetime. Over the years, many treatments which were developed to attempt to lessen the scars have had mixed results, leaving millions unhappy with their appearance and with a resulting loss of self-confidence.

Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills has seen firsthand the effects of facial acne through frustrated clients who have tried everything to smooth out the affected areas left on their faces. “The problem is complicated because the scars often vary greatly in shape, type and color”, says Dr. Ourian. “An individualized treatment plan should take into consideration all the factors present in the person’s skin. For many people, facial acne scars can be successfully treated with Coolaser resurfacing.”

For more severe scarring and pitting, a 2 step process can yield beautiful results:

  1. Coolaser treatment
  2. Use of dermal fillers to build up the pitted areas.

“The Coolaser treatments act as a sort of sanding down of the surfaces of the skin so that the scars become less deep and therefore less noticeable”, says Dr. Ourian. The typical treatment takes about an hour. First, the entire face is numbed, using a topical cream. After this is done, a series of light pulses are flashed on the surface of the skin. Then a beam of light removes the outermost layer of the skin. The skin cells absorb the energy of the light. The absorption causes the instantaneous vaporization of the superficial cells.

A single session may not treat the acne scars entirely if they are too deep. These deeper acne scars can be corrected by injections under the skin to fill in or build up the pitted areas. The injections are done with dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Juvéderm or Restylane. At the consultation appointment Dr. Ourian will determine if Coolaser resurfacing alone will treat the acne scars or if a combination of resurfacing and fillers are needed.

Best Celebrity Stretch Mark Treatment?

Do celebrities suffer from stretch marks? “You better believe it!” says Beverly Hills cosmetic Dermatologist Doctor Simon Ourian. He considers that CoolBeam, the treatment he developed, is the most effective way to deal with stretch marks.

May 04, 2009 — Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, located in the exclusive shopping, restaurant and hotel enclave in Los Angeles, California treats celebrities all the time. “Quite a few actresses and models come to my clinic and stretch mark removal is at the top of their list of concerns, ” says Doctor Ourian.

“Before they step in front of the camera, ” continues Doctor Ourian, “they have a team of makeup artists whose sole responsibility is to camouflage their flaws. Lighting people, cinematographers and directors shoot them from the best angles. And anything that winds up in a magazine or on a magazine cover is re-touched with Photoshop.”

“The problem is that celebrities can no longer control every photo that’s taken of them. In fact, there are websites devoted exclusively to catching celebrities in their most unflattering light. We’ve all seen the photos of cellulite and stretch marks.”

Doctor Ourian continues, “Stretch marks don’t discriminate. If you lose a lot of weight or get pregnant you’re likely to get stretch marks even if you’re famous. Kate Beckinsale, one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood, was quoted as saying: ‘I don’t know how people think you can go from eight-and-a-half stone (119 pounds) to over 12 stone (168 pounds) when you’re pregnant and not get them. I’ve got stretch marks everywhere.’

Beckinsale was actually accused of getting stretch marks as the result of breast enlargement surgery (which she denies). “I see augmentation related stretch marks all the time in my practice, ” says Doctor Ourian, “anytime you stress the skin, as you must with a breast augmentation procedure, you run the risk of getting stretch marks. It’s the same for men who get heavily bulked up in the gym.”

If you put the body under too much stress too quickly it may cause a gap to appear in the dermis as the result of a tearing or stretching of the elastin and collagen fibers that form lattice responsible for firmness and tone. Rapid weight gain can stretch these fibers to the bursting point. Extreme and rapid weight loss can deprive the body of the nutrients it needs to rejuvenate itself.

“I just typed “celebrity stretch marks” into Google, ” Doctor Ourian continues, “and there are uncomplimentary photos of Halle Berry (post-partum), Scarlett Johansson, Cindy Crawford and Sienna Miller. And that’s just the first page of results!”

Two types of rapid weight loss account for a lot of the celebrity stretch marks Doctor Ourian sees: lap band or bariatric surgery for celebrities who are obese and more commonly with Doctor Ourian’s celebrity clientele, crash dieting for those actresses and models trying to achieve what they consider the ideal body and weight.

“If a celebrity or any patient asks, ” states Doctor Ourian, “I would never recommend any type of crash diet. I will tell a patient that the key to maintaining weight loss and preventing weight gain is a healthy low fat diet. Regular exercise will help you burn fat. I’m very happy to help anyone I can to lose fat and get a jump start on their new body. But celebrities face enormous pressure to look a certain way and they’ll do whatever it takes to achieve that.”

Doctor Ourian goes on to explain what he believes to be the most effective way to treat stretch marks. “I developed the Coolbeam treatment specifically to treat stretch marks, both white and red and I believe it achieves results superior to other modalities and lasers. In conjunction with Coolbeam treatments I have my patients use the prescription strength Firm & Fade cream that is available only at my clinic.”

“There are a lot of creams and potions out there, ” continues Doctor Ourian, “most of them don’t accomplish much at all. In fact some of them are pure junk. I’ve worked very hard over the years with a pharmacist to perfect our Firm & Fade prescription cream and it’s available exclusively to my patients.”

As far as the treatment itself, according to Doctor Ourian “For most of my patients the consensus is that there’s very little pain associated with a CoolBeam session. If necessary we can use a topical anesthetic cream to alleviate any discomfort for patients that are very sensitive to pain.”

Dr. Simon Ourian Receives Patients’ Choice Award

Dr. Simon OurianDoctor Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, has been selected by his patients to receive the American Registry’s Patients’ Choice Award for 2008. According to American Registry only a select few of the nation’s physicians are awarded their top rating.

American Registry is partnered with a variety of groups and organizations acknowledged for their efforts to recognize excellence in professionals and business organizations. According to American Registry more than 400, 000 patient ratings and reviews were gathered. After all this data was sorted and analyzed a select few of the most beloved physicians in the nation are granted a Patients’ Choice Award.

Dr. Ourian was singled out for his bedside manner, the amount of time he spent with his patients and their overall perception of him as a physician. Additionally the staff at Epione was recognized for their courtesy and follow-up; certainly a reflection on Dr. Ourian’s decade-long effort to build the finest med-spa facility in the U.S.

When reached for comment Dr. Ourian said: “This award from my patients is especially gratifying. When I was a teenager I worked every day after school and saved my money to get a nose job. Friends and family thought I was crazy but I knew that if I took care of this one thing that bothered me it would make me feel better. Little did I know that operation would change my life; the results were so profound both physically and emotionally I decided then and there, before I went to college or medical school, that what I wanted to do with my life was help people feel better about themselves the way I did at that moment. I’ve put my heart and soul into building Epione into a practice dedicated to this goal and this Patients’ Choice Award is a wonderful validation of my efforts. Of course, I need to acknowledge, as our patients did, the hard work of my staff to provide the best experience possible for every client that walks through our doors.”
