As a bride-to-be, I spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to look my best on my wedding day. I’m trying to diet and take care of my skin, and definitely considering some cosmetic surgery. Liposuction for my love handles or something to relieve the bag under my left eye would be perfect. But before you think I’m a narcissistic woman focused only on her appearance, note that I’m not alone. Record numbers of brides—and even grooms—are choosing to have cosmetic surgery done as their big day approaches. And all of them are doing it for the same reason—to look their very best. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, says that he’s watched this trend grow over the past few years. “For most couples this is the biggest day in their lives and the attention is focused entirely on them,” says Dr. Ourian, “it’s not really a surprise that they want to look their absolute best. And don’t forget the photos; the party is only one day but the wedding photos are forever.”
There are a number of different types of cosmetic surgery options for brides and grooms. Here are a few of them:
Injectables and Fillers
These are great for brides in their late 20’s, 30’s or 40’s who don’t need more in depth surgery, but want to get rid of facial lines. Dr. Ourian cautions that the procedure should be done several weeks ahead of time, to allow for any possible bruising and swelling an opportunity to fade. Full results may take a week to be visible, and the bride or groom may need a touchup as well.
Botox may also be used to alleviate sweating. A quick Botox injection will help a nervous couple get through their vows without staining their clothing, and definitely cut back on dry cleaning bills for the day.
Advanced Cosmetic Surgery
Older brides may need some extra help before their weddings. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or full facelifts will help tighten excess skin, fat or muscle. But these are very invasive procedures, and recovery will not be nearly as fast as with a simple injectable or filler. It is advised that patients give themselves at several months to fully recover from the surgery.
Lipo Before “I Do”
Brides and grooms will do just about anything to lose weight for the big day. They will try every diet on the market, and work out till they drop, but all the diet and exercise in the world may not get rid of the last few stubborn spots—love handles, spare tires, or saddlebags. Liposuction can help get rid of these fat deposits in the abdomen, hips, buttocks, back, or neck. For best results, liposuction should be done at least a month ahead of time to allow your body to fully heal.
Body Contouring
A friend decided to undergo bariatric surgery before her wedding and went from 300 pounds to a svelte 145. The problem? Now she has a great deal of excess skin, which is hampering her self esteem. Brides and grooms who undergo this type of surgery may find themselves in the same boat. Body contouring surgery can eliminate the extra skin, and allow the bride to get that sleeveless wedding dress she always wanted, or the groom to show off his newly flat stomach out on the beach. Unlike the rest of these surgeries, however, it is strongly recommended that the patient have the contouring done in stages. At least three operations should be done, with healing time accounted for, and the patient must plan for them accordingly.
Breast Enhancement
This is one of the most popular surgeries for brides. Many women may have wanted to enlarge or even reduce their breast size, and their wedding day gives them the perfect motivation to do so. Naturally, they want to look good, and they want their pictures to show them at their best. Brides who undergo breast enhancement should have it done a several months before the surgery for best results.
Skin Care
I am fortunate to have clear skin, but other bride-to-be’s may not be so lucky. They must be careful with treatments such as facials or microdermabrasion, because they can make acne worse. Microdermabrasion blasts the skin with tiny crystals to remove a layer and get rid of mild acne scars and brown spots, among other skin problems. Unfortunately, this kind of abrasion can stress the skin out, and trigger an eruption of pimples. Laser therapy, on the other hand, may be used eliminate blotches and noticeable blood vessels.
Regardless of the method you choose, remember that your wedding day is fleeting. The effects of your makeover, however, will last for years. Choose wisely, and you’ll have memories for a lifetime.
