OptiLipo has been around for over 50 years. It was pioneered by a French physician, Dr. Pistor, in 1952. The procedure itself has been used extensively in other countries but is fairly new to America. OptiLipo is used to treat a variety of problems that include: cellulite, unwanted fat deposits, sagging skin and wrinkles.
OptiLipo is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. It can be done right in your cosmetic physician’s office. The procedure involves injecting small amounts of vitamins, in combination with traditional and homeopathic medications. The injections are made into the middle layer of the skin or the mesoderm.
OptiLipo allows the medication to be injected directly into the area that needs sculpting rather than being taken orally and spreading throughout the whole body. So, that is why smaller amounts of the medication can be used. The idea behind mesotherapy is using small amounts of drugs to stimulate the body to heal itself. Originally mesotherapy was developed to help the body heal after a traumatic injury to skin tissue. It has evolved into a cosmetic procedure that helps sculpt the body.
OptiLipo can be used to eliminate cellulite on the thighs and buttocks. Cellulite gives your skin an orange peel appearance. Once it is determined what medications are safe for you to use, you will be scheduled for weekly or every other week treatments. The medications used will be tailored to your specific type of cellulite. While generally fewer mesotherapy treatments are needed the earlier the cellulite is treated, every patient is different.
In the fifty year history of mesotherapy, no deaths have been reported. Compare that to liposuction which unfortunately, averages around 100 deaths per year. Every procedure does carry risks of course. Infection from the injections, while rare, does occur.
Although not a complication, some patients do experience a burning sensation at the injection sites that starts about 20 to 60 minutes after the medication has been injected. Bruising, redness, swelling and hypersensitivity in the treated areas are common issues. These symptoms will gradually get better and should be resolved in about five days. Some patients are given medication to take at home to help with these symptoms.
OptiLipo takes about 45 minutes to one hour to complete and the patient is then ready to return to the activities of daily living. This procedure can be used for other cosmetic changes as well, including sagging skin and bags around the eyes. These procedures require a high degree of skill on the practitioner’s part. Make sure that the professional that you choose does these procedures frequently. This is not a good time to be the first patient to have the procedure done. You will want the professional doing your procedure to have a large amount of experience with this particular treatment.
