Laser liposuction is a new procedure that is used to improve the effectiveness of the older liposuction technique. Traditional liposuction uses a cannula, or tube, inserted under the skin through an incision to suction away unwanted fat cells. Liquid is injected at the site to that is receiving the liposuction to help soften the fat. However, physical force is still required to remove the fat cells as the cannula is fairly vigorously moved around the surgical area. It is essentially this force that breaks up the fat and allows it to be removed. Unfortunately, not only fat is removed, but anything that is in the path of the cannula is removed as well.
Laser liposuction is a combination of the traditional method with several differences. The laser liposuction utilizes a smaller cannula to remove the fat cells. The smaller cannula makes for less damage to the surrounding tissues. The smaller cannula is made possible by the use of the laser to “melt” the fat and make it much easier to remove.
Laser liposuction directs the laser energy by the use of a small fiber. The fat in the target area is then melted by the laser energy. A much smaller incision is made for the smaller cannula to be inserted and the liquefied fat is then suctioned away. This procedure still requires the use of force to help remove the fat cells, but the whole procedure is gentler than before.
Laser liposuction is not for large areas of the body. Typically traditional liposuction is done for large body areas. The laser liposuction is then done for final sculpting of the area. This is also a treatment option for small areas of the body that would otherwise have not been treatable. Facial laser liposuction is highly in demand since very small incisions are made and recovery times are generally reduced.
While laser liposuction is an outpatient procedure, that does not mean there will not be recovery time. You will need to discuss with your physician exactly what your recovery needs will be. How much time off from work will you need? Will you need to wear a special garment after your procedure? Generally, time off from work is greatly reduced with the laser liposuction. Patient’s usually needed to wear a special compression garment when some body parts are worked on. Your post operative instructions will be tailored to your specific case and must be followed exactly for the best outcome to be obtained.
The cost for this procedure will have three distinct billing parts. There will be the cost of your surgeon, the cost of the facility and the cost of your anesthesiologist. Laser liposuction is a slower procedure that traditional liposuction. Facilities and anesthesiologist charge by time increments. So you can expect to pay a little more for this procedure than the traditional liposuction. The facility will also include the cost of the laser equipment. Since this is a new procedure, the equipment is new and that will make your share for using the equipment a little higher than using the traditional liposuction equipment.
