Best Migraine Treatment?

Doctor Simon Ourian is the Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, located in the exclusive shopping, restaurant and hotel enclave in Los Angeles, California. “BOTOX® for migraines is a relatively new treatment,” says Doctor Ourian, “but I’ve found that for my patients, some of whom suffered migraines for decades, the results are nothing short of miraculous.”

For those who suffer from them, migraine headaches can be excruciating and debilitating. When a migraine occurs a combination of blood vessels enlarge and the nerve fibers that coil around them release a mixture of chemicals. These chemicals, including serotonin and dopamine, cause pain and inflammation and the swelling of the blood vessels increases the pain. The response of the sympathetic nervous system leads to a cascading of additional symptoms in the intestines causing vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. These intestinal issues also contribute to the ineffectiveness of oral medications taken once a migraine has commenced. Sensitivity to light and sound and blurred vision are also common migraine symptoms attributable to the response of the sympathetic nervous system.

“The reason that my patients are so enthusiastic about this treatment is that it preventative rather than reactive,” continues Doctor Ourian. “They’re not waiting for a migraine to hit them and then coming to me to relieve them of the excruciating pain. With BOTOX® we can actually reduce the frequency of migraines attacks. And at the same time we’re reducing the attendant anxiety these patients often suffered waiting for their next migraine to hit. It’s really the gift of freedom.” One very satisfied Epione patient explains, “I’ve gone now from about a dozen (migraines) a year down to two a year … and the severity of them has also diminished.”

Some studies show that as much as 17 percent of females and 6 percent of males in the United States have experienced a migraine headache. “Those numbers seem right to me, about three women to each man, as least as reflected in my practice,” states Doctor Ourian. “The typical treatment itself is non-invasive and quick,” says Doctor Ourian, “I simply inject BOTOX® into the side of the neck, the back of the head near the neck, the brow and forehead; really just a more extensive series of injections than that which I provide my cosmetic patients.” (Doctor Ourian is a Diamond provider of BOTOX® according to Allergan, Inc. the manufacturer.)

How long do the results last? “It’s not unusual for a patient to be migraine free for three to six months after each BOTOX® treatment,” replies Doctor Ourian. “I’ve found, as with other BOTOX® treatments, that the effects may be cumulative. As the muscles become progressively weaker fewer injections may be necessary to achieve the same results or treatments may be scheduled further apart.”

“As my patients can attest, BOTOX® treatments for migraines are nothing short of life altering,” concludes Doctor Ourian. “In the time I’ve been practicing as a physician,” concludes Doctor Ourian, “I have not seen another preventative treatment modality achieve superior results for the prophylactic treatment of migraines than BOTOX® injections.”
