Are you considering a fat transfer to the face in California? Here is a little information about the procedure. First of all, this procedure is not a face lift, although it can be done in conjunction with a full face lift. It is called a facial rejuvenation. A fat transfer to the face is an outpatient procedure that will be done in your physician’s office.
As aging occurs, the face loses volume. This loss of fullness happens as the face naturally loses the collagen and fat found in the subcutaneous tissues. The loss of subcutaneous tissue gives the face to have a lax look. Wrinkles appear and creases start to deepen. A fat transfer to the face can replace some of this lost volume. This procedure is used to lift the skin off of the facial bones, and return a more youthful contour to the face. Since there is no skin removed in the fat transfer to the face procedure, the face will have a more natural appearance. That “pulled back” look is not an issue, as it can be with some face lift procedures.
The results are not permanent, since the face will continue to age. Typically patients will notice the wrinkles and creases deepening again in one to five years. This may improve as newer techniques in fat transfer to the face procedures are developed.
The fat for the procedure will be harvested from the buttocks, thighs or stomach. Small cannulas will be used to harvest the fat cells after the area is completely numbed. Two to four ounces of fat cells will be removed. The fat cells are then purified and made ready for the transfer to the face. Typically, several areas of the face will need to have transfers to give a balanced and youthful look.
Often the face will be looked at in three different sections to decide where the fat transfer to the face will give the best results. The brows, forehead and temples comprise the first area, the eyes and nose the second area, and the lips and chin compose the last area.
Fat transfers to the lips can help fill in the lip wrinkles caused by smoking. Some people get a horseshoe like wrinkle under the lip and above the chin. This can also be filled and evened out. The skin in the temple area can get very thin and the blood vessels in the area become very prominent. A fat transfer in this region will plump up the temples and make the vessels less noticeable. There are other fat transfers to the face areas that can benefit from this procedure.
Post operative care is simple since there are very rarely any stitches to take care of. The face will swell from the procedure although the amount depends upon the patient and the number of fat transfers done. The swelling can last from one to two weeks. The procedure can truly rejuvenate the face and give it a youthful, natural appearance. The fat transfer to the face will remain a popular option for California residents for some time to come.
