ArteFill® Injections as a Wrinkle Filler
When you look in the mirror these days, have you been noticing wrinkles and fine lines appearing above the corners of your mouth and below your nose- your “smile lines”- have been becoming more prominent, causing your face to appear older, revealing your true age? If you’d like to visibly reduce the wrinkles and fine lines around your mouth and nose, and give your face back its youthful smoothness, then ArteFill® might be just what you need.
What is ArteFill®?
ArteFill® is the first and only FDA-approved permanent, non-absorable, injectable cosmetic dermal filler capable of providing patients with visibly immediate and long-lasting facial wrinkle reduction, specifically around the nasolabial folds (the areas where “smile lines” form).
More technically, ArteFill® is a specially formulated, medical grade synthetic polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres (beads) along with purified bovine collagen and Lidocaine (an anesthetic that reduces any discomfort felt by the patient at injection sites during an ArteFill® procedure).
Why is ArteFill® effective?
ArteFill® is effective at visibly reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by laugh lines because its effects work two-fold:
- ArteFill® visibly reduces the appearance of wrinkles by adding volume to nasolabial folds
- ArteFill® non-absorable microspheres work with your body’s own processes to naturally increase collagen production by your skin, which keeps wrinkles from returning
Unlike other dermal fillers, the microspheres of ArteFill® cannot be absorbed by your body, resulting in more permanent wrinkle correction than other dermal fillers.
Who is a good candidate for ArteFill®?
If you are a person who have unwanted laugh lines that you would like to get rid of, but want to undergo a facial wrinkle correction procedure that is long lasting, cost-effective, and convenient, you are likely a good candidate for ArteFill®.
However, patients must at least be of average health with no history of severe allergies, especially to collagen or Lidocaine, and must pass an initial ArteFill® Skin Test in order to see whether or not the patient will have an allergic reaction to an ArteFill® treatment.
What to expect during an ArteFill® procedure
After an ArteFill® Skin Test has been administered (and after the patient has been cleared of the risk of potential allergic reactions to any of the ingredients found in ArteFill®), the cosmetic surgeon will inject predetermined amounts into carefully selected areas around your nasolabial folds. The amount of ArteFill® that is needed during an ArteFill® procedure is determined by the amount of wrinkle and fine line reduction that is needed to bring about the results that the patient desires.
Although patients may experience some pain and discomfort during an ArteFill® procedure, most pain and discomfort should be alleviated with the lidocaine that exists in ArteFill®. If more relief is needed, the plastic surgeon may apply a topical anesthetic agent to treatment areas.
ArteFill® procedures are relatively quick, typically requiring less than thirty minutes to complete a full round of ArteFill® injections.
Depending on the patient and the extent of the wrinkle correction that is needed, two ArteFill® procedures may be needed to bring about the intended results, but some patients have found that they need only one ArteFill® procedure to give them the results that they want.
What to expect after an ArteFill® procedure
Because ArteFill® is a minimally-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedure, patients can return to their regular routines and activities immediately following their ArteFill® procedures.
Patients should expect some mild swelling and reddening with increased sensitivity on and around injection sites; slight lumpiness at injection sites may also be experienced by some patients. However, these side effects of should disappear within a couple of days after the procedure, but for some patients, it make take up to a week for side effects to fully disappear. In order to reduce any swelling, it is recommended that patients place an icepack on treated areas for fifteen minutes after the procedure.
