Face Concerns
Concerns for the face generally fall into five categories
- Acne and acne scars
- Discoloration/Sun Damage
- Loss of volume
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Excess hair and razor bumps
Acne and Acne Scars
Acne is one of the most common skin diseases. Acne typically develops during a person’s teen years and 20’s. Acne manifests itself in a number of ways including blackheads and whiteheads. There are more severe forms such as cystic acne and nodular acne. Acne scars result from the body’s efforts to repair acne damaged tissue. Acne scars are essentially visible evidence of these patch repairs.

Discoloration and Sun Damage
Examples of discoloration and sun damage include freckles, age spots and pregnancy mask (also known as Melasma or chloasma.) Hypopigmentation, where a person has lighter skin color relative to normal skin color, is due to the loss of melanin (skin pigment. Hyperpigmentation (dark spots) is typically the result of an increase in melanin. Overexposure to sunlight is a common cause of hyperpigmentation.

Loss of Volume
There are two kinds of wrinkles; dynamic wrinkles that result from the use of our facial muscles when we smile or frown and static wrinkles that can be seen when the face is at rest. For both men and women, most static wrinkles are a direct result of the aging process and the skin’s natural loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The areas of the face most commonly where loss of volume is most apparent are the nasolabial folds, marionette lines and under eyes. Dermal fillers are also used to increase fullness to the lips and cheeks and for cheek and nose augmentation.

Fine lines and wrinkles
As we age the skin begins to develop lines and wrinkles. Along with age other factors that contribute to this process include muscle movement, acne, sun damage and smoking.
The skin is divided into three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis and fine lines are evidence of changes in the upper dermis.

Excess Hair/Razor Bumps
There are studies indicating that more than 20% of women suffer from unwanted facial hair. This is typically the result of heredity or ethnic background but may also be the side effect of certain medications. It is thought that as many as 30% of African American men suffer pseudofolliculitis barbae or razor bumps. For men the face is the most common area to experience razor bumps.
