Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Surgeries Up in a Down Economy

Many plastic surgeons are suffering from the downturn in the economy as people postpone or cancel their costly cosmetic surgery procedures. But renowned cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Simon Ourian M.D. says that these very same people are turning to him, and his center Epione Beverly Hills, for the minimally invasive procedures in which he specializes.

March 22, 2009 — The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), just released a new survey showing there were more than 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. in 2008. That’s about 1 million fewer than in 2007, representing a 12% decrease in the total number of cosmetic procedures. The survey does seem to indicate though a clear shift toward noninvasive procedures The ASAPS has been conducting these surveys since 1997 and cosmetic procedures are up and average of 65% since 1997, minimally invasive procedures are up 239%.

“It is important to appreciate the distinction between invasive surgical procedures and minimally invasive procedures, ” states Dr. Ourian, “in order to understand the numbers. In the simplest sense invasive procedures typically involve the skin being cut. While some invasive procedures are now performed in-office most still require an operating room of some sort. To make these procedures more appealing to potential patients plastic surgeons are performing some under a local, rather than general, anesthesia.”

“Some examples of invasive procedures are: breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. The costs are high because patients typically have to pay for the time of their plastic surgeon as well as the time of an anesthesiologist and the use of an operating theater. A hidden cost, but one which I’m sure is on the minds of more consumers than ever, is the downtime. If you can’t work, you can’t earn a living. And even if you’re taking paid time off to recover, I think people aren’t sure leaving their job for a week or more is a good idea these days.”

“Minimally invasive procedures on the other hand”, continues Dr. Ourian, “offer long-lasting results and little to no downtime, typically at a fraction of the cost of invasive cosmetic surgery.”

According to Allergan Inc. the manufacturer of Botox, Dr. Ourian’s Epione Beverly Hills is the busiest Botox office in Southern California. “I certainly pride myself on this, ” notes Dr. Ourian, “but minimally invasive procedures means a lot more than Botox these days. I am a big proponent of dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Juvéderm, and Perlane. With a simple injection or series of injections I can eliminate wrinkles and facial folds.”

“I know that these are difficult times for some of my colleagues who are excellent plastic surgeons and Dermatologists, ” concludes Dr. Ourian, “but we still maintain a waiting list. Some procedures such as Botox and laser hair removal are as popular today as they’ve ever been. We also offer a line of skin care products.”

Dr. Ourian’s Epione Medical Corporation, located in Beverly Hills Golden Triangle, is among the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art laser and aesthetic surgery centers. Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer for laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Botox, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, acne scar removal, skin discoloration, lip enhancement, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, unwanted hair, and tattoos, cellulite, and tens of others. No Anesthesia: Another Advantage of the Sixty Minute Facelift

If you’re planning to undergo a major surgical procedure such as a facelift you can expect general anesthesia will be administered. It’s important you know the risks and confirm that if your surgical plan includes general anesthesia it will only be administered in an accredited or licensed facility.

Factors that can increase your risk of complications:

  • Heart, lungs or kidney conditions
  • Alcohol use
  • Smoking
  • Food or drug allergies

Although the risks of serious complications from general anesthesia are low, they can include:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Brain damage
  • Death

Anesthesia awareness: It is thought that 1 or 2 people per 1000 cases briefly wake up while under general anesthesia. Typically, the person becomes aware of his or her surroundings but doesn’t feel any pain. There are reports, however, of some patients experiencing agonizing pain and developing lasting psychological problems.

At Epione we offer the non-invasive, non-surgical Sixty Minute Facelift, developed by cosmetic Dermatologist Simon Ourian, M.D. “I think the idea of cosmetic surgery is becoming more commonplace and in our practice we understand that people don’t want to undergo major surgery that may entail significant risk or side effects. We focus our practice on minimally invasive techniques that can produce dramatic results, ” says Dr. Ourian, “and this treatment (Sixty Minute Facelift) has become known as a safe and fast alternative to surgical facelifts.”

The Sixty Minute Facelift treatment is performed without general anesthesia (it isn’t necessary), making it safer than a surgical facelift. Discomfort is described as minimal and appears to be especially effective for lines around the eyes and mouth. Skin texture improves and firming continues for several months after the treatment, resulting in subtle, natural rejuvenation.

Unlike conventional laser surgeries and surgical facelifts that can leave patients with undesirable scars and pulled, unnatural appearances, the result of the Sixty Minute Facelift is a “natural appearance with virtually no pain, ” explains Dr. Ourian.

Get Rid of those Bags Under Your Eyes for Summer!

There are many different causes for dark circles, or bags under the eyes. Dark circles are often hereditary, they tends to run in families so if one of your parents have them, chances are so will you. The skin under the eye is very thin, as blood passes through tiny capillaries close to the surface of the eyes, it creates a bluish tint. As you age your skin becomes thinner and the blood vessels or dark circles more visible.

Lack of nutrients in a diet can also cause dark circles to appear. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you may also develop dark circles below the eyes because extended exposure to the sun can weaken the skin.

What can you do to minimize the appearance of dark circles under your eyes? Be sure to drink enough water. Wear sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 to prevent skin weakening caused by sun damage (EPIONE Sunblock – Protect & Correct). You may be surprised to learn that fatigue usually isn’t the cause of dark circles. But it is still important to get plenty of rest because the lack of sleep or excessive tiredness can cause paleness of the skin, which allows the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear more blue or darker.
