As people age, they develop wrinkles. Fortunately, we now have dermal fillers to help combat the signs of aging. These are popular because they can get rid of wrinkles in various places, such as around the outside of the eyes and between the eyebrows. They can also fill out lips and make the patient look younger without investing a great deal of time or needing extensive healing. There are potential side effects to this treatment, as with all cosmetic treatments. Swelling can take place, as can allergic reactions to the filler itself. The recipient may also need booster treatments over time, as the fillers tend to be absorbed into the skin. The choices include:
Restylane: Restylane is a dermal filler that is made from hyaluronic acid. This acid occurs naturally in the skin. Once scientists were able to synthesize it, it became the first non-animal hyaluronic acid on the market. It can be used for laugh lines (wrinkles around the nose and mouth), shadows under the eyes, and to fill out lips. Before Restylane, dermal fillers were made from collagen obtained from cows or created from silicone or human fat. Since hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, the chances of the patient having an allergic reaction to the substance is very low. Restylane can last for up to 18 months. Currently, it is the most popular dermal filler on the market.
Perlane: Perlane is very similar to Restylane in that it is made from the same ingredient and produced by the same company. The difference is in how long it lasts. Perlane will last for up to 6 months, as opposed to Restylane’s 18. Perlane was approved in 2007, so it is one of the newest products available.
Juvederm: Juvederm is also made of hyaluronic acid. It is brought to you from the people who created Botox. This product is used for filling out lines around the eyes and laugh lines as well.
Radiesse: This product is made up of microspheres which are made up of calcium. The manufacturer states that it promotes collagen growth, which helps fill out wrinkles and other signs of aging. When the body is confronted with a foreign substance, it automatically begins to produce collagen.
Evolence: Evolence was approved in 2008. It is made from collagen obtained from pigs; pig systems are remarkably similar to human systems, which would account for the collagen use here.
How does the patient determine which filler is best? The truth is, there is no one best filler; there is only the best filler for the patient’s needs. By communicating with their doctor and outlining their expectations, it is possible to find the right filler for their situation.
