Acne is bad enough when it first occurs, whether during the teen years or later in adulthood. “The Coolaser™ treatments act as a sort of sanding down of the surfaces of the skin so that the scars become less deep and therefore less noticeable”, says Dr. Ourian. The typical treatment takes about an hour. First, the entire face is numbed, using a topical cream. After this is done, a series of light pulses are flashed on the surface of the skin.
Then a beam of light removes the outermost layer of the skin. The skin cells absorb the energy of the light. The absorption causes the instantaneous vaporization of the superficial cells.

A single session may not treat the acne scars entirely if they are too deep. These deeper acne scars can be corrected by injections under the skin to fill in or build up the pitted areas. The injections are done with dermal fillers such as Radiesse®, Juvéderm® or Restylane®. At the consultation appointment Dr. Ourian will determine if Coolaser resurfacing alone will treat the acne scars or if a combination of resurfacing and fillers are needed.
