Did you know that up to 95% of people will have scars from acne in some way, shape or form? Knowing this may make that small, crater shaped scar or that dark blotch on your skin a little less annoying. The best way to avoid acne scarring is to prevent it in the first place, but that can be difficult to do. Your genetics may also naturally gear you toward pimples, and even affects how you scar. If you find yourself unable to prevent acne breakouts and scarring, here are some ways to make the results a little easier to handle.
“I treat acnes scars every day,” says Doctor Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, “it’s one of the treatments I offer that’s most gratifying for me. I’ve had patients that whose acne scars were so profound and embarrassing to them that they literally wouldn’t leave their house. When you can help someone like that it really makes your day.”
Doctor Ourian goes on to explain his technique for treating acne scars. “For most patients my initial course of action is to use the Coolaser. I’ve developed a technique whereby I essentially sand or smooth down the skin, to use laymen’s terms, making the scars less deep. This is often all I need to do for shallow acne scars. For deeper scars I’ll suggest a dermal filler such as Radiesse, Restylane, or Juvéderm.”
But is it painful? According to Doctor Ourian “Most patients liken a Coolaser session to the snapping of a rubber band on their skin. Of course, I want my patients to be as comfortable as possible so, if necessary, I can prescribe a topical anesthetic cream to help alleviate any discomfort.”
“I have been practicing as a cosmetic dermatologist for more than ten years,” continues Doctor Ourian, “and I have yet to see another laser or treatment modality achieve superior results for the treatment of acne scars to the Coolaser. This is especially true when the Coolaser is used in conjunction with a dermal filler.”
As you are treating your skin, you should always use a sunblock of some kind. Remember to reapply every two hours, and note that the SPF should be a minimum of 30. Doctor Ourian recommends his EPIONE Sunblock – Protect & Correct:

- Is sensitive-skin friendly physical sunscreen
- Helps to prevent and reduce the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet light
Acne scars can be a problem, but they can be treated with a talk with a qualified physician and a good regimen.
