Acne is the result of the body’s overproduction of sebum, which combined with dead skin cells, clogs pores and creates a fertile bacterial breeding ground. The body responds by rushing white blood cells and inflammatory molecules to fight infection and repair the tissue. This process can take place over days or even weeks. There are several different types of acne scars:
- Boxcar Scars: These acne scars are angular scars typically found around the cheeks and temples. Some may be deep and others shallow.
- Ice Pick Scars: These acne scars typically appear as pits in the skin and are among the most common.
- Keloid scars: The acne scars may occur after an injury to the skin such as acne and are overgrowths of fibrous tissue. These acne scars can form on the shoulders, back and chest.
- Rolling Scars: These acne scars are gently undulating without sharp borders.
